Don't take too big of bites out of the starter templates, its harder to figure out what you did that broke it, so take it slowly and make sure your changes "work" one at a time. I really believe that the best way to learn FM is to closely look at how solutions are done and modify them gradually one tweak at a time so you can see if what you are doing is working or not in a known working solution. What they are giving away for free is better than templates I've seen people charging a hundred dollars or more for. If for nothing else, taking it apart to see how the navigation and relationships are done as well as scripting for many things could really help your learning process.
I've noticed you have posted several questions regarding the starter templates, you might want to take a look at these people are the ones that made several of the starter templates and their free FM starting point is a more advanced combination of several of the starter templates that come with FM.
